Outdoor
Activities
In addition to the hunting and fishing activities there
is an endless amount of hiking that can be done. The terrain
is varied from high, sandy dunes to lush green meadows
with fens and bogs just waiting for you to explore. The
trails are cattle trails, usually leading to the nearest
windmills. There is a constantly changing kaleidoscope
of colors in the endless variety of wildflowers that cover
the hills and trails. |

Cattle
Branding a Social Event!
You can bring your own horses to ride through the hills
at your leisure. You may enjoy helping to move the herds
into different pastures, or maybe helping to roundup the
cows and calves for branding. In the springtime the brandings
are a big neighborhood social gathering. It is where all
of the neighbors come together to help get everyone’s
calves branded. The branding is done to mark the calves
to show ownership. The hard work will be done by noon,
and then the usual branding day feast begins! The ladies
of the neighboring ranches bring their specialty pies,
desserts, and salads, to help out the hostess who usually
provides a tantalizing roaster full of beef, roasted to
perfection, along with all the trimmings. Horseshoes,
cards, and conversation fill up the rest of the afternoon.

Canoe, Kayak, or Tanking
There is a paddle boat for use on the on-site, spring-fed
lakes. It is great for fishing, or just to sun or enjoy
the spectacular sunsets. Canoe, kayak, or tanking trips
down the Middle Loup River can be arranged. This is a
good river for novices. The Dismal River is great canoe
trip, but is best tackled by the experienced users. The
trips take several hours for completion.
Nebraska Sand Hill Golfing
The Mullen Golf Course is less than a half hour from the
ranch. It is a very fine, community golf course that welcomes
guests at any time; except, when engaged in a tournament,
or if hosting a planned activity. It is a nine hole, grass
course, challenging, and fun to play. While you are in
Mullen you may be able to enjoy a tour through the Mullen
Historical Society Museum. The world renowned Sand Hill
Golf Club, a private club, is about 20 miles South of
Mullen and if they are not too busy, you might be able
to take a cart up the hill to Ben’s Porch and enjoy
the spectacular vista of the Crenshaw designed links golf
course.
The Dismal River Club is a new 18 hole private, links-type
golf club , southwest of Mullen about 20 miles. It opened
in July of 2006. It is a beautiful work-in-progress and
well worth a trip out there.
The Prairie Club, 402-376-1387, mandi@theprairieclub.com.,
located about 10 miles south of Valentine, NE.
For the more energetic guests there is Badminton; Croquet;
a basketball hoop; a new game called Sand Hill Golf that
is fun for the whole family; and Horseshoe Pitching.
During inclement weather there is a good supply of games,
cards, and puzzles to help while away the rain, wind,
or snowy weather. |
Trapshooting
Blue Rock shooting is a great activity for the professional
shooter, as well as the novice. The ranch will provide
the blue rock and trap operator. You will need to bring
your own guns and ammo. There is additional cost for this
activity and times for shooting will be coordinated with
the trap operator. |

Skies A Stargazing Smorgasbord!
Away from the big city and bright lights, the Sand Hills
are a stargazer’s paradise for viewing the universe!
Nicknamed Big Sky Country, it is one of the best places
in the United States to view the stars. There is no interference
from “city lights” for many miles. The stargazers
like to come to the ranch for a lengthy visit just to
set up their huge telescopes and monitor the nightly,
goings-on in the universe. The annual Nebraska Star Party
is held each year just 25 miles north of the ranch at
Merritt Reservoir on Hwy 97. It attracts stargazers from
all over the United States and has been a huge success. |
