Historians will gain a feeling of appreciation for the life and history of the early pioneers at the Nebraska Double R Ranch. They can tour the on-site, original 1908 sod house and the restored one-room, circa 1910 country school house. Both of these places have a treasure trove of books that they are free to browse, or read while here, and, there is a wonderful antique, circa 1887, Upright Grand Piano in the schoolhouse in good condition but out of tune.
Many star gazers have come here from around the United States and have had a leisurely stay at the ranch. They have been able to set up their giant-sized telescopes to view the stars. They appreciate that the skies are very dark with no light pollution to obstruct their views of the night sky. The annual Nebraska Star Party is held about 20 miles north of the ranch at the Merritt Reservoir in early August 2018. Sometimes some of those attendees do stay here and set up their scopes for private viewing. Additionally, the Nebraska State Merritt Reservoir and the Nebraska State Refuge Lakes are about 20-25 miles North of the ranch and both offer recreational boating, fishing, and hunting.
