In addition to the hunting and fishing activities there is an endless amount of hiking that can be done. The terrain is varied from high, sandy dunes to lush green meadows with fens and bogs just waiting for you to explore.

The trails are cattle trails, usually leading to the nearest windmills. There is a constantly changing kaleidoscope of colors in the endless variety of wildflowers that cover the hills and trails.

Canoe, Kayak, or Tanking

The lake is great for fishing, or just to sun or enjoy the spectacular sunsets. Canoe, kayak, or tanking trips down the Middle Loup River can be arranged. This is a good river for novices.

The Dismal River is a great canoe trip, but is best tackled by the experienced users. The trips take several hours for completion.

Golfing in the Nebraska Sandhills

The local Mullen Golf Course is less than a half hour from the ranch. It is a very fine, community golf course that welcomes guests at any time; except, when engaged in a tournament, or if hosting a planned activity. It is a nine hole, golfer friendly course, with beautiful grass greens.

The world renowned Sand Hill Golf Club, a private club, is about 20 miles South of Mullen. It prides itself on continuous years of Top 10 rankings in the golf world. Here is an article about the construction and a bird’s eye view of the holes. Truly a beautiful course!

The Prairie Club is a semi-private club located 30-40 minutes north of the ranch. It is the home to two 18 hole courses, where they rotate private/public play.

Frederick Peak Golf Club, is a local course located on the northease side of Valentine, approx an hour from the ranch. Opened in 2017, Frederick Peak Golf Club boasts 10 of the most fun golf holes that you will ever play. The dramatic canyon landscape carved out by the Minnechaduza Creek is ideal for golf. The area’s natural beauty blends perfectly into the golf course to create an unheralded outdoor experience. In additional to the golf course, Frederick Peak offers a driving range, two practice greens, and a clubhouse to relax in.

Nebraska Sandhill Birding

The Double R Guest Ranch LLC was pleased to become listed on the Nebraska Birding Trails website. A big variety of birds are here at the ranch that are native to this area, including Robins, Barn Swallows, owls, woodpeckers, crows, sparrows, curlews, thrashers, finches, yellow-tipped blackbirds, meadowlarks, Ring-tailed Pheasants, Sharp-tail Grouse, Prairie Chickens, Mourning Dove, bittern, and scores of others. There are many water birds also until time of frost which might include grebes, loons, swans, Blue Herons, cranes, pelicans, ducks and Northern Geese, and more.


Activities for the Whole Family

For the more energetic guests there are a number of sports and games, from badminton and horseshoes to croquet and basketball.

During inclement weather there are a couple indoor games, cards, and books/articles to help while away the rain, wind, or snowy weather.
